Cash to curb louts' bad behaviour

Graffiti and underage drinking are some of the issues being tackled
The Home Office has named towns and cities in the east of England which will be given extra cash to cope with anti-social behaviour.

They are Gt Yarmouth and Norwich in Norfolk; Tendring, Harlow and Southend, Essex; Ipswich, Watford, Peterborough and Northampton.

The police stress the action areas were not chosen because of specific anti-social behaviour problems.

A total of 50 locations around the UK have been selected as action areas.

Extra cash and powers will be made available to fight vandalism, drunkenness, rowdy neighbours and graffitti.

The Home Office says the money will help provide support for victims and give local authorities the ability to put their communities' safety first.

Other details of the plan include academies for officials, specialist prosecutors and new anti-social behaviour response courts.

On Wednesday, ministers revealed that 2,600 anti-social behaviour orders (Asbos) - the government's flagship measure to curb louts and vandals - were handed out over the last year, double the number issued in the previous four years.
