Southend Hospital
Southend Hospital will get 100m to expand emergency care
Millions of pounds is to be spent on projects to improve health services in the East of England.

Health Secretary Dr John Reid will give the go ahead for investment at three of the region's NHS trusts on Tuesday.

The biggest winner will be Beds and Herts where 880m will be spent on expanding Watford Hospital and providing a new hospital at Hatfield.

Southend Hospital will get 100m for redevelopment to increase capacity and Papworth Hospital NHS Trust gets 148m.

The Cambridgeshire money is to be spent on providing heart, lungs and oesophagus services in new state-of-the-art buildings.

This could include redeveloping the existing Papworth site or building at Addenbrooke's Hospital at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

Dr Reid was expected to give further details about the projects - 15 in total across the country - later on Tuesday.

The total investment is more than 4bn and will be funded largely through a Private Finance Initiative (PFI).

The government aims to have 100 new hospital schemes open to patients by 2010.
