Stuart Nicholson and his son Connor died on the A66 |
A driver who admitted killing a father and son when his tanker collided with their horse-drawn carriage on the A66 has been jailed for four years. Gerald Grange, 51, from Stockton-on-Tees, admitted two counts of death by dangerous driving at Carlisle Crown Court, in June.
Stuart Nicholson, 44, and his six-year-old son Connor had been returning from the Appleby horse fair.
Their home-made carriage was hit by Grange's 16-tonne tanker.
Made two calls
He had previously denied the two charges, but changed his plea before the trial was due to commence.
The Crown failed to prove that Grange had been on his mobile phone at the time of the accident.
Grange's mobile phone records showed he had made two calls, which did not connect, before he dialled 999 to report the accident. It is not known if the calls were made before or after the accident.
Mr Nicholson was a member of the travelling community and the pair were from the Peterlee area.
