Hadrian's Wall is used in the new King Arthur movie

The VisitBritain organisation is using the film as the theme for the latest in its movie map series.

The map features locations linked with the Arthurian legend and the scenes used in the film, including Hadrian's Wall and Tintagel Castle in Cornwall.

The film casts doubt on Cornwall's links to Arthur by placing the legend of the ancient monarch in Cumbria.

Arthurian expert John Matthews said: "In my opinion, the film comes closer to historical truth than any yet made.

Myth and legend

"It will be a reminder for many people that the legend of King Arthur will always have its roots here in Britain.

"The film will capture audiences' imagination and inspire them to visit Britain and discover more about the reality behind the man, the myth and the legend."

The new film, which stars Clive Owen, Keira Knightley and Ray Winstone, portrays him as a Roman soldier on Hadrian's Wall.

Tintagel in Cornwall has built much of its tourist industry on the popular belief it was King Arthur's birthplace.

But the Cumbria Tourist Board says the evidence is "overwhelming" that his real home was there.
