Bill Bryson described Durham as a "perfect little city" |
Travel writer Bill Bryson is to receive an honorary degree from the University of Durham. His degree will be conferred on Friday on what is the final day of degree ceremonies at Durham Cathedral.
Bill Bryson was born in America, but has settled in England where his travel books have become best-sellers.
He has described Durham as a "perfect little city" and wrote in one of his books: "If you have never been to Durham, go there at once."
The university will also award an honorary degree to the Chemistry Nobel Prize winner Sir Harry Kroto.
On Friday Mr Bryson paid tribute to the people of Durham. He said: "People keep doing very kind things to me in this part of the world and this is the nicest that's happened yet, it is a big honour.
"The cathedral is the main thing - anyone who has passed through the city on the train and seen that view know it is one of the great sights of Britain.
"This whole area is outstandingly friendly. It's a very pretty city and you can walk around and find you get to know it very quickly."
He said it was a huge honour to be awarded the degree.
"It is a great compliment to have an institution as important as Durham University honour me."
Speculation has grown recently that former US President Bill Clinton could be the next chancellor of Durham University.
Mr Bryson said of the rumours: "I think it would be wonderful. I think he will be very good for it - as long as you keep him away from the interns."
