Sacked workers, who staged a protest, now have their jobs back |
More than 200 steel workers sacked after a contractual dispute with the firm behind the new Wembley Stadium have been given their jobs back. Staff from Darlington firm Cleveland Bridge were sacked after being switched to another firm in a row between the company and main contractor Multiplex.
Some of the ex-workers claim work on the project had virtually ground to a halt since the dispute began.
But on Tuesday the row was resolved after an afternoon of talks.
The dispute began almost a month ago when the men were told to leave the north London site. They have manned a picket line ever since.
But on Tuesday a breakthrough was made after talks between unions and the Dutch contractor, which allowed the workers to return to the Wembley project.
Paul Kenny of the GMB had claimed the workers were treated "disgracefully" and hit out at the government for keeping in place employment laws which he said made it easy to sack workers.
The workers had also been claiming that staff brought in from Holland to replace them have walked out in support.
Multiplex said it could guarantee the project would finish on time in 2006.
