Bus company hopes to avoid strike
Stagecoach bus
Stagecoach is meeting TGWU members on 3 September.
Transport company Stagecoach says it hopes to avoid strike action by bus drivers in the north-east of England.

Around 750 members of the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) voted in favour of one-day strikes, to take place on 10 and 17 September.

Three depots in the region - Slatyford and Walkergate in Newcastle and South Shields will be affected.

But the firm hopes a meeting with TGWU members on 3 September will resolve the dispute over pay increases.

'Resolve the issue'

Members of the general workers' union, the GMB, working at the Sunderland depot have voted to accepted the pay offer.

Stagecoach's operations director Graham Brown told BBC News Online on Thursday: "We've been in discussion with the unions since April as regards the pay award.

"A 9.9% offer over two years is well above the rate of inflation.

"The GMB has accepted this amount, and we hope to sit down with the TGWU members next Friday to resolve the issue."
