No hospitals were awarded the worst rating for cleanliness
Most of the hospitals in Kent and East Sussex have been rated as being good for cleanliness according to a new report.

The Patient Environment Action Team for the Department of Health looked at both cleanliness and food standards in hospitals across the country.

Each was given one of three ratings red for poor, amber for acceptable and green for good.

A total of 80% of hospitals in Kent and East Sussex were rated as good for cleanliness.

But only 34% of the hospitals in the two counties were found to have good food standards.

The results for 2003 are an improvement on some of the ratings last year.

In 2001, Pembury Hospital and Kent and Sussex hospital were both given red ratings for cleanliness and were the only ones in the region to get the lowest score.

But this time no hospitals were awarded the red rating although Pembury and the Kent and Sussex still only managed an acceptable award.

The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Kent and Canterbury Hospital have shown no improvement in the last three surveys.

The William Harvey Hospital in Ashford was awarded an acceptable rating for its food standards.

Howard Jones from the East Kent NHS Trust said: "There is room for improvement across the whole of the NHS.

"But it is really because at present we are not able to offer a 24 hour service for cooked food in the kitchen at night.

"In the future in nine months time if you fancy a curry at 0300 BST in the morning then we will be able to provide that."
