The Dales village of Arncliffe inspired the showcase |
The Yorkshire showcase at the Chelsea Flower Show has won a gold medal.Yorkshire, Alive with Opportunity is made up of 29 trees, 200 woodland ferns and 700 cottage plants as well as 26 yards of Yorkshire paving.
Inspired by the landscape of the Yorkshire Dales, the garden features a packhorse bridge, traditional field barn and drystone walls.
It is designer Julian Dowle's 10th gold at the Royal Horticultural Society event.
The authenticity of the Yorkshire garden has led to Princess Michael of Kent marking it out as her favourite.
She said: "I love the Yorkshire garden. It's absolutely charming."
I think this garden is fantastic. It's so beautiful the way it blends the natural countryside to a real cottage garden |
Regeneration company Yorkshire Forward put forward the 100,000 sponsorship to encourage more tourists to the region.
"In order to make this truly Yorkshire I had to visit the Dales many, many times," said Mr Dowle.
"Each visit I discovered more detail. It's the detail that I believe is most important."
It was a trip to Arncliffe that proved most inspirational, with a replica of the Old Post Office a key feature of the finished garden.
Native wildflowers
Stone masons from the village built the cottage and walls at the show.
Gardening expert Charlie Dimmock said: "I think this garden is fantastic. It's so beautiful the way it blends the natural countryside to a real cottage garden."
The traditional Dales hay meadow either side of the beck is full of native wildflowers.
All the stone used to create the walls, barn and bridge as well as the native wildflowers will be returned to their original source after the show.
