The beaches are judged on cleanliness and water quality

Six beaches in the North East were given the award for their high standards, which is one less than last year.

They were commended for litter-free sands and good facilities which make them as clean as "Europe's best" - according to the organisers of the award.

Hartlepool Marina missed out on the award this year after the local authority failed to apply.

In Cumbria, Whitehaven Harbour has been allowed to fly a flag for the first time and Maryport Marina has regained its status.

Gordon Thompson, the chairman of the Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, said it was a long-awaited sign of success.

Hard work

"We feel very pleased about this. It is a great achievement for the harbour.

"Staff have worked very hard for this, it is not something that is just given, it has to be earned.

"The judgement is on the water quality and the cleanliness of the surrounding area.

"Getting this Blue Flag award is an indication that we are succeeding in that department."

On Thursday it was announced that six resort beaches in the North East will be allowed to fly the coveted Blue Flag in 2003 - the most recognised beach award throughout Europe.

'Cleanliness problems'

The flags are awarded in the UK by Environmental Campaigns (Encams), organisers of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign.

Sandhaven beach at South Shields, three beaches at Tynemouth - Cullercoats, Longsands South, and King Edwards Bay - plus Whitburn North and South beaches on Wearside all scooped awards.

But it was bad news for Whitley Bay South beach which lost its flag this year.

A total of 105 resort beaches in the UK are allowed to fly the Blue Flag this year, breaking 2002's record of 83 and almost double the figure achieved in 2000.

Marian Harrison, regional director of Encams, said: "There are however still cleanliness problems that need overcoming at other beaches."
