Derriford Hospital came out well in the mortality rates survey |
All four of Devon's hospital trusts have some of the lowest mortality rates in the South West, according to a survey published in the Sunday Times. The figures are based on data compiled by the Dr Foster Unit at Imperial College, London, an independent organisation which researches health services.
Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust topped the table in the South West, with the lowest mortality rates of any hospital in the region.
In 2001 it had a death rate of 90, but in the latest survey it has gone down to 82.
Important indicator
According to the report, Trusts with a mortality figure of less than 100 are doing better than expected.
The authors of the guide say the rates are an important indicator of the quality of clinical care within a hospital.
A spokesperson for the trust told the BBC the RD&E was pleased to be rated highly, but added there was always room for improvement.
South Devon and Northern Devon Healthcare Trusts came eighth and ninth in the survey of 18 hospitals.
The guide also reveals the waiting list figures for Devon's hospitals, where Plymouth is still the worst performing trust in the South West for both in and outpatients.
