Second cavalry soldier dies
Karl Shearer
Lance Corporal Karl Shearer died in an accident on 1 April
Tributes have been paid to a British serviceman who was killed in Iraq when his light armoured vehicle overturned after sliding down a bank.

Lance Corporal Karl Shearer of the Household Cavalry Regiment has been named as the latest British fatality in the conflict.

His death was the second loss in a week for the regiment, which is based in Windsor, Berkshire.

On 28 March, Lance Corporal Matty Hull was killed in a "friendly fire" incident.

Commanding officer of the unit Lieutenant Colonel Mark van der Lande paid tribute to the men.

He demonstrated the very best of what it is to be a soldier of the Household Cavalry and will be greatly missed.

He said: "For the second time in less than a week, the Household Cavalry Regiment grieves a lost soldier.

"Lance Corporal Karl Shearer died on operations in Iraq on 1 April and another soldier remains very seriously injured.

"My sympathy and that of the whole regiment goes out to his widow, Suzie, to their daughter and their families at this difficult time and to the family of the injured man.

"Karl was a popular and very able soldier whom I had recently promoted.

"He demonstrated the very best of what it is to be a soldier of the Household Cavalry and will be greatly missed."

Colonel van der Lande said both L/Cpl Shearer and L/Cpl Matty were "brave and courageous men who died doing their duty serving their country under very difficult conditions".

L/Cpl Shearer was travelling in a Scimitar armed reconnaissance vehicle which was on its way to relieve another troop when the accident happened.
