Salamanca is one of the first red kites bred in captivity

Salamanca, a one-year-old red kite, is part of the captive breeding programme at the National Bird of Prey Centre in Gloucestershire.

The aim of the breeding programme is to repopulate the Gloucestershire countryside with the magnificent birds of prey.

Salamanca's father had been shot in the wing and his mother, from Spain, was also flight impaired.

Thousands of vets from across the country attended the four-day British Small Animal Veterinary Association Congress in Birmingham.

Among the highlights of the event was the chance to see the work of its charity Petsavers, dedicated to curing animals with genetic diseases.

And avian expert Neil Forbes, from Stroud, Gloucestershire, discussed the latest developments in treating bird casualties.
