The city's recycling rate is still growing
Peterborough has been rated as one of the top recycling cities in the UK.

In statistics released by the government, the city was given a recycling rate of 18.6% - nearly twice the national average.

The findings show Peterborough's recycling rate is continuing to grow at a rate of 23.6% - with nearly every household in the city having access to kerbside collection or recyclable materials.

These include newspapers, cardboard, junk mail, aluminium and steel food and drink cans, plastic bottles and juice cartons.

Sorting processes

The collected material is delivered to a special facility in Fengate where the recyclables are separated by a series of hand and machine sorting processes linked by conveyors.

The materials are then bundled up and sold to recycling processors to be made into new products.

Peterborough's cabinet member for the environment said: "This is a fantastic achievement and serves to highlight the extraordinary recycling success from this approach.

"The statistics show a commitment to provide the best possible collection and recycling system to suit the needs of people living in Peterborough."
