The man recovered the semi-automatic pistol from a downed German aircraft in World War II.

He handed it into a police station in Staffordshire on Monday.

The national month-long firearms amnesty was launched on Monday where people can hand in their guns anonymously and without fear of prosecution.

Good response

A Staffordshire police spokesman said so far 18 guns, including eight shotguns, and six imitation guns had been handed in to police stations in their area.

A force spokesman said he was pleased with the response to the amnesty.

"The message is obviously getting through to local people," he said.

"We feel delighted that people feel able to come forward."
