The contaminated fuel is cloudier than clean petrol

It is understood the problem is affecting 95 octane unleaded fuel and originated at a distribution centre, rather than at particular petrol stations.

The RAC said on Wednesday there had been an increase in the number of breakdowns reported since the weekend.

Motorists are said to have experienced a loss of power in their vehicles.

Drivers affected are advised to keep the receipt from the fuel, and get their cars checked at a garage, before contacting trading standards officers.

Car breakdowns have been reported in Manchester, Liverpool, Chester and Wirral.
