Schools in Bristol are to share in more than �11m of government cash to pay for replacing and modernising temporary classroom buildings and providing new facilities. The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) is making a series of grants to the Local Education Authority and to schools themselves.
More than �5m will go towards modernising school buildings and �4m will go directly to schools under the Local Management of Schools (LMS) scheme.
The replacement of temporary classrooms and modernisation of other buildings on several sites has been allocated �875,000.
A scheme to build a new sports hall for Cotham High School will get �934,000 and there is �200,000 towards the completion of an additional classroom for St John's Primary School, Clifton.
A further �586,000 will go towards disabled access works at various schools.
Peter Hammond, deputy leader of Bristol City Council, said: "We're delighted that what are fairly substantial sums of money are being made available.
"These will enable us to assist a number of city schools to make significant improvements."
