Dec is the voice of blue-haired animated charatcer Engie Benjy |
Tyneside TV favourites Ant and Dec are trading in Geordie for German after becoming a huge hit on the continent. The stars, who have only just finished presenting their Saturday Night Takeaway Show, have been the voices for Kids TV favourite Engie Benjy since 2002.
But now bosses at Cosgrove Hall Films have decided to take the cartoon to Germany along with its Tyneside stars.
Ant and Dec are already so popular there from their Byker Grove days, that Granada are to ask the Geordie duo to learn the native lingo to avoid dubbing their voices.
The pair will have to brush up on their German pronunciation and learn to read the translation for Engie's famous catchphrase - "whadda-we-do-Dan?" - which will become "was machen dir Dan?".
Engie Benjy follows the adventures of an "engine doctor" who fixes his friends' vehicles, from a sleepwalking bus to a hiccupping aeroplane.
Dec plays the blue-haired engine doctor Engie Benjy while Ant provides the voice for his sidekick Jollop the dog.
TV bosses are also considering other changes to ensure the show is a success with German kids.
Changes thought to be under consideration include changing blue-spotted Jollop into a German Dachshund and replacing Engie's spikey blue hair with a mullet.
