Shoplifters' photos to be distributed
Shopping scene
Police say money raised from shoplifting often pays for drugs
Kits including photos of known shoplifters are being handed out to retailers in the Wellingborough area in a bid to reduce crime.

Officers will deliver the packs next week as part of the Wellingborough Partners Against Crime (WPAC) initiative.

Along with photos of offenders who have already been banned from stores in the Northampton, Kettering and Wellingborough areas, the packs include details about fighting shop crime.

PC Dave Dicks said: "Thousands of pounds of stock is stolen from shops each year which obviously affects their profits and may result in increases in prices for shoppers.

"We hope these anti-crime packs will make it easier for shopkeepers to identify known offenders to keep them out of their stores."

More than 60 shops, including those in the Swansgate Centre, have signed up to join WPAC.

Police said that theft from shops is believed to be the main source of funds for buying drugs.

Stores participating in a similar scheme - the Northampton Retail Crime Initiative - have reported a significant reduction in the amount of property stolen.
