Suzanne Parrick: "My daughter was hit by a car yards from home"

Laura Perrick, who was 10 when she was killed crossing the road in November 2001, donated her kidneys and other organs for transplants.

Four people had successful transplants as a result, her mother, Suzanne Parrick of Coalville in Leicestershire, said.

She said transplant co-ordinators are facing a huge shortage of donor organs.

Nearly 400 people in the East Midlands are waiting for a transplant, and some of them are desperately ill.

Mrs Parrick said: "My daughter was hit by a car only yards from our home.

"She had run between some parked cars and was hit.

"In the inquest, they said she had suffered severe head injuries.

"She was in a coma for seven days, fighting the swelling in the brain but eventually she had to give in."

Laura had told her family she thought organ donation was a good idea, so the decision was a lot easier.

"Three children and an adult were helped by Laura, and potentially even more, as they can keep organs and use them later," Mrs Perrick said.

Laura's kidneys and liver were used in transplants and her heart valvues have been frozen so they can be used later.
