A third of all children in Sheffield schools will benefit from a �265m 10-year building programme. The council cabinet is considering details of the capital strategy which has been boosted by private sector cash.
By 2007, two-thirds of secondary school pupils will be taught in either rebuilt or revamped classrooms.
Councillor Angela Smith said: "The programme is part of an overall strategic approach to regenerating, managing and maintaining our school buildings and grounds.
"We have one of the best records in the country for improving our school infrastructure but we will not be resting on our laurels as there is still much to be done."
In a separate announcement the council will pass on an extra �22.5m to local schools during 2003.
The funding is needed to help schools meet extra costs as part of raising attainment levels in the classroom.
