Ms Matravers was affectionately known as Glady |
A Somerset pensioner due to celebrate her 100th birthday on Wednesday has died less than a month after being forced to move from her nursing home. Gladys Matravers left the Warwick Gardens care home in Taunton after it was announced in early February that it would have to close due to financial problems.
She was one of 29 residents who had to be re-housed.
Friends say from the day of the move, Ms Matravers' health diminished and she lost the will to live.
'Lovely lady'
A friend said: "I used to look after Gladys. I don't think she was as happy at the new home as she was at Warwick Gardens.
She was just a lovely lady. I miss her a lot."
At the time of the closure, the home owners blamed the government, saying MPs had introduced a number of new regulations for care homes without providing any financial support.
The department of health said the new regulations were there to protect care home residents by improving good homes and were not intended to close them down.
Ms Matravers, known to her friends as Glady, died on Monday.
