BAE blames a lack of orders for Hawk trainer aircraft |
A petition has been signed by over 1,000 workers at the BAE systems factory near Hull as they seek reassurances about their future. It calls on the government to ensure negotiations over contracts for the manufacture of Hawk trainer aircraft are resolved as quickly as possible.
It is hoped a deal to build the jets for the Ministry of Defence's Military Flying Training Systems project will safeguard 2,000 jobs at the site in Brough.
The company has set itself a deadline of 31 March to get together the information required for the Ministry of Defence.
But with time running out, workers and local MPs want to know if the deal will go ahead.
David Davis MP, whose constituency contains the Brough site, said: "This petition has been signed by the workforce - the very people that will be directly affected by this decision.
"We have all been working hard to ensure there are no outstanding differences between BAE Systems and the government.
"But there are only three weeks to go.
"This petition is a formal way of saying 'please help', and will be seen by those who are influencing all this, Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon and Lord Bach."
The document, with 1,235 signatures, has been presented to the House of Commons.
A spokesman for BAE said they were working with the Ministry of Defence to get the bid ready.
