Fans charged after football violence
Wolverhampton Wanderers' Mark Kennedy beats Southampton defender Jason Dodd
Southampton beat Wolves to win a place in the FA Cup semi-final
Seven football fans have been charged after street fights sparked by Southampton's FA Cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Saints beat their Midlands rivals 2-0 at home on Saturday to reach the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time in 17 years.

But police say the post-match violence was the worst since the club moved to the new St. Mary's Stadium on Northam Road two seasons ago.

Chief Superintendent Graham Wyeth said: "It took officers two and a half hours to restore order. We were quite stretched for a period of time."

Threatening behaviour

Stephen Shakespeare, 25, from Dudley, was charged with using words or behaviour likely to cause a threat of violence.

Timothy Burge, 30, from Cirencester, was charged with using violent or threatening behaviour.

Nigel Hunt, 38, from West End in Southampton, was charged with being drunk and disorderly.

Four others were charged with being drunk when entering a football ground: Paul Mills, 49, from West Midlands; Stephen Boon, 44, from Worcester; Darren Jobson, 32, from Ryde in the Isle of Wight and Jason Homer, 31, from Dudley.

Brick attack

The men have been released on police bail and face magistrates in Southampton on Friday.

A 33-year-old man from Thornhill in Southampton, who was arrested on suspicion of attacking a man with a brick, was released on police bail pending further inquiries.

A 19-year-old man from Bitterne in Southampton and a 32-year-old man from Canford in Dorset, arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, remained in custody on Monday at Bitterne police station.

Five other men arrested for breach of the peace were released once police judged they were no longer a threat.
