Plans to demolish school buildings close to Roman remains, are causing concern at Southwell, Nottinghamshire. The �15m project involves knocking down one of the two sites used by the Minster School.
The school wants to have all its facilities based on the current Nottingham Road site, which is about half a mile from its other building on Church Street.
However, the town council is calling for a public inquiry to assess the impact on local heritage.
Roman Remains
The building on Church Street would be demolished and replaced with houses.
But the town council says the site, close to the Minster is a sensitive one, with Roman remains beneath it.
The council chairman, Brendan Hague, says the plan need further consideration: "This is something the town is going to have to live with not just for 10 years, for 20 years, for 100 years, for 200 years, who knows for how long?
"I think we need to take a bit of extra time to get it right."
Pupils say the move would mean less time spent walking between sites and more time in the classroom.
A decision on whether a public inquiry will be held is expected to be made before councillors consider the plans on Tuesday.
