Protest against home closure

The care home was forced to shut at the end of January
A protest meeting has been organised to discuss the closure of a care home in Leamington Spa.

Sandra Coombes, former manager of Magnolia House, has organised the meeting, due to be held on Saturday.

The care home, which housed 22 elderly people, was forced to shut at the end of January due to a lack of funds.

Mrs Coombes said the effect of the closure has been devastating.

Turned down

She said the meeting would address what they say is the lack of care for old people in the community following the closure of the home.

Scores of people are expected to attend the meeting including members from Residents' Action Group for the Elderly (RAGE).

The home's owner Dr Gurmit Singh said he was unable to keep it open after an application to extend the building was turned down by Warwick District Council.

He said hopes had been pinned on a final reprieve from the council, but without upgrading the facilities it could no longer run at a loss.

Alternative accommodation was found for all the home's residents.
