The camaras are all controlled from one room

In total, 108 CCTV have been installed in 19 council blocks in the St Pauls Gardens and St Judes area of the city.

The �1.5m project is being funded by the Home Office, with the running costs being met by a weekly �5 service charge per tenant.

The cameras are due to be officially switched on by Bristol City Council on Wednesday.

'Safe feel'

More than 200 residents live on the St Pauls Gardens Estate and almost 500 people on the St Judes Estate.

One local resident welcomed the introduction of the cameras: "If they stop people being mugged in our area, they are worth every penny."

Council Leader Diane Bunyan said: "People have a right to feel safe on Bristol's streets.

"Putting in new cameras on this scale is a measure of just how seriously we take this issue."
