Victim Andrew Kernan suffered from schizophrenia |
A coroner on Merseyside has written to the Director of Public Prosecutions to find out why an inquiry into a fatal shooting by police is taking so long. Andre Rebello said he has been given no idea when a report into the killing of Andrew Kernan, currently with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), is to be published.
Speaking at Liverpool Coroners' Court, Mr Rebello also said it is unclear whether any charges will arise from the inquiry.
On Wednesday the CPS said it was not unusual for the delay in publication, despite the fact Mr Kernan died more than 18 months ago.
Merseyside Police has also expressed frustration about the delays in the case and said it has written to the Police Complaints Authority about it.
Mother 'disgusted'
A police marksman shot 37-year-old Mr Kernan in 2001, while he brandished a Samurai sword outside a pub in the Wavertree area of the city.
Mr Kernan's mother, Marie, said she is furious about the way the inquiry into her son's death has been handled.

She told BBC Radio Merseyside: "I'm disgusted, absolutely disgusted. I'm waiting all this time and it's (the case) is getting passed from pillar to post. "My boy was not a criminal, he was never a criminal, and by god I want justice for him."
Inquiries into the case were initially carried out by Greater Manchester Police.
On Wednesday a CPS spokesman said it was not "unusual" for the process to take this long, especially as it is a "sensitive case".
The report is currently being considered by a senior lawyer in London, as part of the procedure, but the spokesman could not confirm when the report will be published.
