City's toilets 'worst in Britain'
The UK's worst public toilet - in Bristol
The prgramme's film crew found the toilet dirty and smelly
Public toilets in the West of England are the worst in the country, according to a BBC TV programme.

UK's Worst... Toilet singled out lavatories in Bristol and Malmesbury, Wiltshire, after they were nominated by members of the public.

And the show's presenter, Nick Knowles, found the conveniences at Bristol's Snuff Mills park were not up to standard when he visited.

The toilets were found to be dirty and smelly - but the council responsible for them blamed vandals.

Pop-up urinal
Bristol considered building pop-up toilets in the city

Dr Clara Greed, a member of the judging panel on the show, to be screened on BBC One on Wednesday, was shocked at the state of the toilets.

She said: "It is pretty dirty and poorly maintained.

"They have put blue blocks into the urinals, but they are still dirty, chipped and disgusting.

"And the wash basin obviously hasn't been cleaned in a million years."

But Mike Branaghan, a spokesman for Bristol City Council said: "We are going to move the toilets into a more prominent location.

"We hope this will reduce the amount of vandalism that is going to occur."

Pop-up urinals

Last year the city council discussed building 20,000 'pop-up' urinals around the city, but the idea was dismissed.

Toilets in Malmesbury were also shortlisted for the 'UK's Worst...' prize.

Local resident Ken Pockett said: "The smell and the state of them inside is disgusting - they really let the town down."

The West also has one of the best toilets in the country - the seaside conveniences at Clevedon near Bristol won the South West's Loo of the Year award.

The toilets are decorated with posters and flowers, and music is piped into the building.

  • UK's Worst... Toilet is on BBC One at 2000 GMT on Wednesday 5 March.
