Residents fear the plans could have an impact on wildlife |
Mini-hovercraft could soon be whizzing across a boggy field in Kent if plans for a new activity centre are approved. Businessman Ivan Pullen, a hovercraft enthusiast, hopes to set up a school in Coleman's Field, Sandwich, to teach people how to pilot the vehicles.
Mr Pullen, whose Flying Fish Hovercraft business makes 9ft long single- and two-seater models, said people now needed a place to play with them.
The activity centre, based in a flood-prone field, would give lessons to beginners and provide a 'flying' course of varied terrain for those with experience.
Impact on wildlife
Mr Pullen said: "Loads of people come and ask you 'where can I have a go, where can I have a go?' and you can never tell them.
"There is nowhere to go and I want to spread my obsession, my interest, and see it grow a little more."
But the plans face opposition from residents who are worried about the impact the attraction might have on the environment.
Phil Scott, of Sandwich Action Group, said: "Noise is a concern to local residents and some people are expressing concern about traffic on the bypass being distracted.
"Another serious concern of ours is the impact upon the wildlife.
"The field used to be used as a regular roost for the local bird population and since the flags have gone up - no birds."
The plans will go before Sandwich Town Council next month.
