A company in Derby is pushing for sign language lessons to be put on the national curriculum. John McDonald and Diane Holloway from BSL 4 UK have written a children's book which teaches British Sign Language.
They aim to create a generation of youngsters who can communicate with deaf people.
The pair, who are both deaf, say better communication skills will help end frustration and isolation faced by many of the eight million people in the UK whose hearing is impaired.
Mr McDonald said: "It is very important to all deaf people in the country if Diane and I can be successful in creating a generation of sign language users."
They hope that feedback from more than 200 schoolchildren in Derby, who have been using their book, will strengthen their case.
Ms Holloway said: "I believe it will help deaf people if hearing people learnt sign language - basic sign language."
