A refurbishment of the Grand Theatre is part of the plan |
A plan to invest 100m in Leeds' entertainment, sporting and cultural life has been drawn up. It includes the refurbishment of the Grand Theatre, a new city museum, the restoration of Roundhay Park and Kirkstall Abbey and a new swimming pool.
Also on the list are new headquarters for Northern Ballet Theatre and the Phoenix Dance Theatre and a new theatre in Millennium Square.
The plan has been prepared by the Leeds Initiative which brings together public, private, community and voluntary organisations.
Amateur dramatics
Founded in 1990, the Leeds Initiative is led by Leeds City Council and supported by over 600 local organisations.
The strategy brings together many projects which have already been announced, some of which have proved controversial.
New diving and swimming facilities are being built at the South Leeds Stadium at the expense of closing the International Pool in the city centre.
And amateur dramatic groups in the city were upset when plans were originally announced to turn their city centre base at the Civic Theatre into the new museum.
Councillor Tom Murray, who chairs the Leeds Cultural Partnership, said: "The cultural strategy will focus on the combining energies, enthusiasm and talent of our cultural organisations to bring a 'wow' factor' to the city."
