The alliance will offer a support network |
Six charities in Devon and Cornwall have come together to tackle issues of prejudice in the region. Without Prejudice South West is offering confidential help to victims of hate crime, such as racism and homophobia.
The alliance of charities is made up of the racial equality councils in Cornwall, Devon and Plymouth, the Black Networking Group and the Intercom Trust for Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals.
Its first achievement has been to produce a series of colourful, easy-to-read help leaflets.
Leaflet displays
The leaflets are being described as a "friendly gateway" to help for people who have been on the receiving end of prejudice.
The hope is that they will be on display across both counties in corner shops and village stores.
However, the alliance is not connected with social services or the police.
The help the charities are offering is described as complementary, but separate from that offered by the statutory agencies.
It is also strictly confidential.
'Racism exists'
The Black Networking Group said: "The aim of the group is to reduce the isolation felt by many people who live and work in rural communities in the far South West of England.
"Personal and group support is offered via a network of individual members and connected supportive networks."
Devon County Council said: "Racism exists in Devon, although many people might not think so. It affects the lives of people who live, work in and visit the county and the extent of it is well researched and documented.
The Intercom Trust said of its work: "We have conducted numerous focused campaigns of advocacy and mediation on behalf of individual clients."
