Multilingual roadwork signs hit the streets

The signs will be put up for the duration of the roadworks
Diversion signs in Bath will be translated into foreign languages to help tourists find their way around.

Roadworks are to take place in the centre of the historical city - a popular destination for visitors to the UK.

So city leaders, worried the disruption might cause difficulties for those new to the area, have decided to erect multi-lingual road signs.

Notices in French and German - as well as the usual English - will be put up during the resurfacing of Gay Street and Bennett Street.

"We have a large number of foreign visitors to Bath." said David Anderson, the council engineering consultant in charge of the works.

Traffic re-routed

"This is a very popular area so we are simply doing what we can to help them have a pleasant visit to the city."

The roads will be periodically closed between Sunday 23 and Thursday 27 February while repairs are carried out.

The council says it will do all it can to minimise noise and disturbance caused during the resurfacing work.

Gay Street will be closed from 1830 GMT to 0630 GMT, while Bennett Street will be shut between 0930 GMT and 1600 GMT each day.

Traffic will be re-routed along signed diversions at these times.
