Protest planned for Archbishop's enthronement
Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury
Campaigners want Dr Williams to visit an asylum centre
Campaigners plan to gather in Canterbury on the day the new Archbishop is enthroned to protest against his views on asylum seekers.

Protesters are upset with Dr Rowan Williams for comments he made in an interview with the Sunday Times.

In the article he suggested it would be right for asylum seekers to be kept in secure accommodation.

But since the comments were published Dr Williams has said he does not believe in mandatory detention and he was misrepresented.

See situation for himself

But campaigners are still intending to stage the demonstration in the centre of the city on Thursday.

Tom McGowan, from the Kent Committee to Defend Asylum Seekers, wants the Archbishop to visit a detention centre to see the situation for himself.

He said: "We are hoping to invite the Archbishop to visit some detainees at the Dover Removal Centre.

"We think it is important he understands the impact and the secondary trauma that this sort of policy will inflict on asylum seekers."

Dr Williams stepped into the asylum debate at the beginning of February when in the interview he said using secure accommodation was reasonable as long as applications were processed faster than at present.
