People in Oldham, Greater Manchester, have been told to expect a 12.3% rise in their council tax.

Oldham Borough Council said the increase is likely to be agreed because it is facing budget cuts of �2m.

The authority said the increase in payments is largely out of their control, because funding is increasing for the likes of emergency services.

If the increase is agreed it will mean residents of average Band D properties will pay �133 more during the next financial year.

Council leaders said there were also due to be increases in funding for waste disposal and transport, which again are outside their control.

They also said the council has lost more than �4.5m in central government funding, which has been a big factor in the budget cuts.
