Dairy production at a Wiltshire factory will come to an end on Friday after almost a century.

The St Ivel factory in Wootton Bassett, which opened in 1908, makes cheese, milk, cream, and yoghurts for supermarkets across the country.

Parent company Uniq, said last year, it was trying to find a buyer for its Shape yoghurt brand.

Then it was announced it had sold the brand to Danone for �32m.

'Stiff competition'

Uniq continued to manufacture the yoghurts at Wootton Bassett, but now Danone has moved all production to its own sites.

Around 200 staff lost their jobs as a result of the sale. On Friday there were just 140 workers left.

St Ivel's managing director Chris Thomas said: "Naturally we are disappointed that we were not able to secure a deal that guaranteed the long-term future of the factory.

"However, our yoghurt business has not been profitable in recent years, and has faced increasingly stiff competition in its marketplace.

"It was important that we achieved a sale on the best terms possible to avoid a continuation of the losses.

"The Wootton Bassett factory had a skilled and dedicated workforce that continued to demonstrate its professionalism during a very difficult period and I would like to thank them for their valued contribution."
