| Wednesday, 5 February, 2003, 06:43 GMT Freedom honours under discussion ![]() Mrs Thompson joined Boyzone on a rollercoaster ride Two of Blackpool's best known personalities look set to be awarded the Freedom of the Borough. The honours for former England footballer Jimmy Armfield and Pleasure Beach chairman Doris Thompson are due to be discussed at a full council meeting on Wednesday. The entire company of HMS Splendid are also being considered for the accolade. The town's mayor, Councillor Ivan Taylor, is proposing the honours.
Now aged 67, he still lives in the resort and is a lifelong supporter of the club. Doris Thomson is the chairman of Blackpool Pleasure Beach, and celebrated her 100th birthday earlier this month with a ride on one of the famous rollercoasters. She would be recognised for her contribution to the resort's tourism industry and would become the first woman to receive the honour. HMS Splendid, which is due to be decommissioned next month, has had a close association with Blackpool for more than a decade. If the proposals are formally agreed, a separate ceremony will be held for the presentation of the accolades. | See also: 28 Jan 03 | England 11 Jan 03 | England 16 Jun 00 | Sport 09 Jul 99 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
