The tradition of moving heavy goods off the roads and on to the water is being revived in the North West.

Haulier KD Marine is using the Manchester Ship Canal in trial runs to transport Canadian wheat from Liverpool to Manchester.

The cargo - which has already travelled from North America - is loaded at Garston Docks in Liverpool.

It then travels along the Manchester Ship Canal into Salford Quays and the Rank Hovis Mills.

The Port of Manchester declined in the late 1960s when road travel became more popular.

The water revival is now being studied by other firms in the North West as an environmentally friendly answer to transport problems.
