Redeem can detect low level gamma radiation

A device to detect radiation from so-called dirty bombs has begun manufacture.

Such devices which spread low-grade radioactive material have been described as a one of the terrorist threats to the UK.

Now metals company Corus has launched a detection unit, called Redeem.

Manufacture will go ahead in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, and Redcar, Teesside.

Redeem can detect low level gamma radiation on packages and people as they pass within four metres of the detection unit.

The unit, 54cm in length, can be installed inside buildings as part of security systems.

Corus manager Les Swain said: "Radiation detection plays a key role in reducing the risk of public exposure to contaminated materials.

"In that respect, Redeem is the public's first line of defence."
