Windsor Castle is planning to harness the power of the River Thames in an attempt to go green.

The Berkshire castle, which is of the Queen's official residences, is in line to benefit from a new hydro-electric plan.

"I'm sure the Queen would be pleased to know Windsor Castle was being supplied with environmentally friendly power," said a spokesman for Energy company Innogy.

Eton Town Council has received a planning application for the �600,000 project, to be located at Romney Weir.

Royal approval

Innogy, which made the application, is hopeful the scheme will get the go-ahead.

An Innogy spokesman said: "The project will take in Windsor Castle but it won't be used to power all of it.

"We have identified the site at Romney Weir as a prime location to harness energy.

"Enough electricity to power around 300 homes would be created if the scheme went ahead."

A royal spokesman said the Queen "welcomed" environmentally friendly initiatives.
