Here are some eyewitness accounts of what happened.

Nash Rawther got on the train at Mile End.

A funny noise was coming from beneath the carriage all the way from Mile End. It sounded like something was loose.

Then as the train progressed the sound was coming more and more.

I was thinking what's going to happen. Since the train left Bank station the carriage was hitting both sides. The driver didn't seem to notice or couldn't stop.

Once it stopped there wasn't a door or anything. I think it was ripped off.

I couldn't see anything. Everyone was in panic, screaming.

When anything happens the first thing people think is terrorism.

The three back carriages looked somewhat squashed. The front three carriages looked fine.

There was a tremendous bang, the glass shattered and flowed like a river of glass.

People were screaming. There was smoke and there was the smell of burning.

There was blood on the floor.

At one point the lights on the train failed and people moved forward in the dark.

One of the doors had been ripped off and was laying on the platform.

When the train arrived at the station I think it came off the track and hit the tunnel.

There was some kind of fire.

Most people's faces went black and they couldn't breathe properly.

There was smoke inside the carriage. We were lucky to survive.

Most of the people in my carriage were crying and praying for survival.

In my carriage there were a lot of kids and they were crying.

The train stopped suddenly and bumped six times before it stopped so people were really scared and didn't know what was happening.

The driver himself couldn't even breathe himself. His face was all black.

We could hear the driver going 'mayday, mayday everybody get off'.

The doors wouldn't open and people couldn't get out.

They were trying to smash windows and there were still people in the carriage who couldn't get out.

It was so scary.

Marian Cassidy was on the tube train on her way to a job interview.

We were just sitting there and it started jumping and it got worse and worse.

And we were just bouncing up and down in the tunnel.

And then the windows caved in and the doors opened in the tunnel and we were just bouncing up and down.

There was smoke and everything and the driver came on and said everyone to get to the front of the train and started shouting 'mayday'.

It was horrible.

There was an immense vibration and banging as the train shuddered to a halt.

The driver said, 'Mayday! Mayday!', then, 'Help! Help!' there was a fire at the back of the train, and told everyone to leave as fast as possible.

There were many people panicking in my carriage, which was very full.

The carriage began to fill up with smoke, as did the platform.

And we could see those on the platform running and screaming as we tried desperately to open the doors of the carriage.
