Reg Crew, 74, who suffered from motor neurone disease, died on Monday at a flat in Zurich. He drank water laced with barbiturates under the supervision of Dignitas - an organisation which helps the terminally ill commit suicide. Mrs Win Crew, who was with her husband when he died, described her husband's death as "dignified".
Mr Crew told broadcasters he had enjoyed a "good innings". He added: "I'd never say I was tired of life, but I'm tired of the life I'm in and I know I am never going to be cured... so it's time to throw my hand in. "I've had enough. I couldn't live another six or seven months like this. "I'm gradually going out of my mind, because this is not living." 'Peaceful' end Mrs Crew said: "I'm glad it's all over. "I'm glad for Reg's sake... it was what he wanted and he ended his life peacefully. "I'm just mad that he couldn't have ended it in his own country. "He loved England. He always said it was the best country in the world and he should have been able to end his days there in peace like he did here." The ITV production team could also face questioning about Mr Crew's death. | See also: 22 Jan 03 | Entertainment 21 Jan 03 | England 21 Jan 03 | England 20 Jan 03 | England 20 Jan 03 | Europe 20 Aug 01 | J-M 12 Aug 02 | Newsnight 29 Nov 01 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
