| Monday, 20 January, 2003, 09:43 GMT Pre-fab houses could ease growth boom ![]() Milton Keynes has grown by 64% in 20 years People who move to Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire in the next 30 years could be living in prefabricated houses. The government wants the fastest growing borough in the country to pilot a fast way of building pre-fabs which will form much of the proposed expansion. Last week Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott held a meeting with local officials about the plans. Milton Keynes South West MP Dr Phyllis Starkey, who attended the meeting, said the idea was a practical one and could mean faster development. "There are lots of developments in the building trade." "Because of our appalling weather, there's a huge incentive to try and find ways of prefabricating - of not having to build a house from scratch on the spot", she said. Thousands of prefabricated homes were built just after World War II as a short-term solution to Britain's housing crisis. | See also: 13 Nov 02 | England 30 Sep 02 | England 18 Jul 02 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
