| Friday, 17 January, 2003, 16:57 GMT Singers headline memorial concert ![]() The girls were attending a New Years' party Soul diva Beverley Knight and Brit award nominee Ms Dynamite are to headline at a community concert in Birmingham to mark the deaths of two teenagers killed outside a New Year's party. Charlene Ellis and Latisha Shakespeare were shot dead outside a hairdressers in Aston on 2 January. Ms Knight and Ms Dynamite will join other artists at a special concert in memory of the girls at Aston Villa's football ground on Sunday. The free open-air event has been organised by Aston Community Youth Project (ACYP) and will include contributions from the Council of Black-led Churches and the Bishop of Birmingham, the Right Reverend John Sentamu. ' Come together' Andi Thomas of the ACYP said the concert is a way of uniting the community.
"What they wanted was to bring everyone together from across the community - different churches, different community projects, schools, colleges, everything. "They really want them to come together and hold hands and say enough is enough, we need to change this." Candlelit vigil The deaths of Latisha, 17, and Charlene, 18, prompted the government to announce a tightening of UK firearms laws. Charlene's twin sister, Sophie, and their cousin, 17-year-old Cheryl Shaw, were also injured in the flurry of bullets. Sophie remains in hospital but Cheryl was released after treatment for a hand wound. Hundreds of people have already attended a candlelit vigil in memory of the two girls. |
