| Thursday, 16 January, 2003, 14:47 GMT Track to the future ![]() The tracks have now been buried under concrete A stretch of tram track dating back to the early 1900s has been unearthed by construction workers in the centre of Nottingham. Cobbles were revealed on either side of the line on Upper Parliament Street. It was uncovered by a group of workmen helping to develop the city's new tram network. But despite the historic links the old tracks have been concreted over to provide foundations for the latest line. Same gauge Stephan Richeux, from Nottingham Express Transit, said the lines were the best tracks they had found during the building works. "We have dug up little bits here and there but they were the first ones in such a good state. "It was a reasonably large stretch intact with cobbles around it." Although it has the same gauge as the new network, which is due to open later this year, the track would useless nowadays as they would sink into the ground under the heavier trams. | See also: 03 Nov 02 | England 27 Aug 02 | England 13 Aug 02 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
