Autistic boy needs 'better understanding'
Claire Why
Claire Why's son was expelled for violent behaviour
The mother of a boy with autism, who was expelled from school for violent behaviour is calling for a better understanding of her son's condition.

Nine-year-old Mitchell Why was expelled from Hanley St Luke School, in Stoke-on-Trent last November.

His mother Claire said her son has an autistic obsession with dinosaurs and his anger began after one of his dinosaurs was confiscated.

She said when she arrived at the school to collect him he was running up and down the corridor banging his head against a door.

Stoke-on-Trent Council say he should go back into mainstream education with a support worker.

But Mrs Why fears that if the worker doesn't have specialist training in dealing with autistic children it will happen again.

"The headteacher of a local special school said it would be a shame to put him there because he is so bright," she said.

"I do feel the local education authority is right, he should be in a mainstream school.

"But there needs to be a better understanding of my son's condition."

A spokesman from the council said: "We think we've found a mainstream school for him to attend which has experience of dealing with autistic children."

The headteacher of the school declined to comment.
