Plummeting temperatures and rock hard pitches will see soccer and rugby teams across Leeds kicking their heels again this weekend.

Last week's heavy rainfall and freezing temperatures over the past few days mean pitches across the city are unplayable.

And with more bad weather conditions expected in the next few days, pitches have been deemed unsafe and unusable by Leeds City Council's leisure services department.

pParks and countryside dvision, which maintains the pitches, carried out an inspection of the surfaces and decided not to prepare the grounds for this weekend's matches.

Denise Preston told BBC News Online: "We realise it is hard for the players to go two weeks without outdoor sport, and obviously their fixtures will be building up.

"But I am afraid until the weather conditions ease up a bit it will be very difficult for games to go ahead."
