| Monday, 6 January, 2003, 09:00 GMT Warning over new roadworks ![]() Workers are killed on motorways every year Motorists using the M1 in Derbyshire and Leicestershire are being warned to expect delays for the next four months. And they are being urged to cut their speed and pay close attention to lane changes in a bid to prevent accidents. Work begins today to resurface part of the motorway to make it quieter. But the Highways Agency, which is in charge of the operation, says roadworkers are killed on similar projects by moving traffic, because motorists fail to drive safely. Safety plea People living in areas close to the motorway like Long Eaton and Kegworth have been calling for noise to be reduced for a number of years. Now the Highways Agency is introducing a new road surface which will reduce noise on the carriageway between junctions 24 and 25. New drainage is also to be installed. The work will last until April. A 50mph speed limit will be in place as will a contra-flow system from 0600 to 2000 GMT. | Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
