The games were held in a purpose-built stadium in east Manchester

She has since taken up a similar role in Liverpool's bid to be named Capital of Culture in 2008.

The games were hailed as a success, boosting the image and economy of England's North West.

Manchester City Council estimates an extra 300,000 visitors each will spend 12m in the region.

Ms Done, who headed the Manchester 2002 organisation, said the honours recognised the hard work put in by everybody involved in the games.

'Successful games'

She said: "I think the team that put the games together will recognise that these honours reflect the work that they did and the new self-confidence that Manchester has as a result of a really successful games."

Other award winners in Greater Manchester include the Dean of Manchester, the Very Reverend Kenneth Riley, who receives an OBE.

PC Philip Gleave has been awarded an MBE for services to community policing in Manchester.

Fadima Zubairu, a careers adviser, and Sister Ingrid Hitchens, who helps children in Bolton, also receive an MBE each.
